Project 1: Stuff as Objects

Jade Haldane

Project 1

Module 1

Beginning experimentation and learning to model: I focused on exploring a variety of objects with a variety of primitive shapes and complex objects.

Activity 1

This apple was my first model, I was super proud of how well sculpted it is and I learned how to make simple shapes and use the bend tools. This is a delicious apple that I thought would be a good starting point. This model was my first challenge I couldn't figure out how to seamlessly blend two torus' together, this is my piercing pillow the hole is for my ear so there's no pressure on it at night. A 3D model of my airpods, it was a challenge to make the indents and I ended up creating them using an optical illusion. These are my airpods I use them everyday for most of the day, definetly one of my most used daily objects. This is a 3D model of my obsidian crystal, I picked it because it was simple. This is an obsidian crystal I have owned for several years, I always keep it on a shelf visible in my room. This is a 3D model of my favourite lip balm, I really like the design of the tin it's more unique than a tube but its also not an annoying shape. I made it pretty quickly and felt really confident about it. For one of my complex objects I thought this felt flower pot would be good, I like the shapes and I feel like it's acheivable. This complex object is an eraser of the Pokemon Smoliv. I bought this with my little sister and really enjoy collecting Pokemon trinkets with her so it makes me happy to see my Pokemon collection. This oil bottle was the first object I thought about making but I ultimately felt that it was more complex than I was initially comfortable with and it didn't really align with anything else I wanted to make. I consider making this kirby squish as one of my simple objects but I felt that the face was beyond my skills at the time.

This is my final model for Smoliv, I'm super proud of how it turned out there was a fair amount of trial and error, overall I enjoyed the process a lot. This model taught me a lot about assembling an object together and having it make sense on every plane. This succulent is a green version of the felt plant. Since Smoliv is a grass type Pokemon I thought it would be a fun challenge to put him in the plant so he could have a habitat. Since Smoliv is a grass type Pokemon I thought it would be a fun challenge to put him in the plant so he could have a habitat and it certainly was. I collect every figure and plush of Mimikyu that I see, this one is my favourite simple figure of him that I own. Since he is my favourite little guy I really wanted to make him. I am so proud of the way this Mimikyu turned out there are so may complicated things in this piece and the textures turned out cute too. Since the plant was so many pieces to put together I wanted to make sure every angle made sense and looked good. Making the mouth for Smoliv was the first time I used splines, I was very afraid it would make him look different than my vision because I liked how silly he looked before the mouth. One of my first ideas for Smoliv was to make him look like a glazed clay piece but I didn't end up liking how shiny it made him look. Finding textures I liked was a bit of a struggle for the plant as I didn't want it to be too shiny and funny looking. Since the plant was so many pieces to put together I wanted to make sure every angle made sense and looked good. Putting Smoliv in the plant was very cute but without lighting it looks kinda silly. I wanted to make sure my Smoliv model was structually sound so I made sure his side profile makes sense and everything is properly connected. I had a much easier time finding textures I liked for Mimikyu than the other objects, I love the way the body texture looks. My first attempt on making spiral eyes with splines did not exactly look good, it was a very steep learning curve to make eyes that looked nice. I collect every figure and plush of Mimikyu that I see, this one is my favourite simple figure of him that I own. Since he is my favourite little guy I really wanted to make him. After many tries this was my successful version of making Mimikyu's very complicated spiral eyes.

Material Workshop 1

When we entered the textiles classroom a fourth year student was kind enough to show us their final project which is the quilt pictured above. They explained to us it’s made of natural fibers and attached together with thread made from all natural fibers as well. Looking around the textiles room I was really fascinated by the large collection of threads and yarns they had, they have so many colours and even shades of colours I found it really inspiring to look at. The students were kind enough to explain that these are all natural fibers as well. The Craft and Design Clay students were kind enough to explain to us that these are examples of the different glazes they use on their projects. These are different concentrations of different pigments causing different colours when it's fired, before that the glazes look really similar.

Material Workshop 2

Pearlescent textures are so pretty and shiny they’re often used for limited release figures, I think they look great and I love the way that the light reflects and creates new colours on the surface. Due to how pretty it is I think this would be a great texture for my 3D models. While I don’t always love the feeling of corduroy fabric I l do love the way it looks. One of my favourite kinds of Pokémon cards are the ones that feature the Pokémon as a little textured plush. Due to how much I like the texture I want to consider this texture for my 3D models. I have always loved the texture of stop motion clay and plasticine I find it very charming to look at. I love how cute it is and I think it’s a great texture to give to something fun and toy like such as my 3D models.

Digital Published Model 3

This is my final model for my original doll creation.

For my final model I created a doll head inside a glass case, it's definetly the most complex model I made and I like it though I wish I could've done a better job.
